In the next issue of my newsletter, which gets distributed today, I make the following statement:

Those who mock the use of social media for crisis prevention and management probably descend from those who mocked every major techno-cultural development since we became homo sapiens.

....so, I quite agree with you!

Best,

Thanks Jonathan,

With respect to your comment and also that from Rob below - I have always found the the best way to get companies to embrace crisis preparedness is for them to have a close brush with a crisis themselves. Either in the sense of a crisis that nearly happens, or happens to a business close to them.

Until that point, it is all theory. Training / crisis simulation often helps here which is why I am keen to introduce live social media into crisis training. Do this and you will naturally find that the client becomes glued to their social media monitoring panel and desparate to start tweeting or blogging in order to try and calm to storm. Throw in an interview with a journalist who likewise is using social media as their source and they will have overcome their technophobia without even realising it.

Nice summary. Yesterday I ran a crisis simulation involving social media elements. Based on what I observed of the participants, for a lot of companies, social media is still the 'side-show' and not the main event (in spite of recent evidence).

True, there are some elightened business leaders using social media - but we have a long way to go.
